Advanced Vegetable Production (Thurs Option, member price) more info Now that you’ve been growing awhile, it’s time to develop your intermediate to higher level growing techniques from long-time farmer, Ellen Polishuk. Co-owner of Potomac Vegetable Farms, Inc., Ellen has grown for farmer’s markets, roadside stands and CSA in Loudoun County, Virginia for over 20 years. Her organic methods yield significant production, high quality, and good profits. With specific focus on vegetables, greens,and herbs, Ellen will offer insight into medium to large-scale production (10 acres of vegetables, 10 acres of soil building crops). Topics to include: fertility, rotation, harvesting, and farm business management. She will also address labor and profitability issues. Discussion is encouraged so bring your questions! The 2013 Conference will take place in Richmond at the Holiday Inn-Koger Center on February 8-9. This year's schedule is packed with knowledgeable speakers, informative sessions, and outstanding networking opportunities.

This year’s Farm School for Beginners will include a Farm Tour on Friday, February 8th featuring Tricycle Gardens’ two locations - Richmond's premiere Urban Farm in the Manchester District and Tricycle Gardens' Learning and Demonstration Site in Church Hill.

The Urban Farm Tour includes an overview of growing healthy, local, organic (but not certified) produce in an urban setting. The tour highlights their herb garden, insectary, hoop houses, water catchment system, compost operation, and vermi-composting.

The Learning and Demonstration Site Tour includes an overview on growing healthy, local, organic produce in an urban setting and above ground. The tour highlights the solar powered greenhouse, sub irrigated planters, worm wicking beds, passive solar techniques, cold frames, creative reuse and low cost building methods, composting, vermi-composting, water catchment, and more. There is much to be learned from their their four-season production and distribution. The tour guide will also discuss future educational and volunteer opportunities with Tricycle Gardens.

Although this tour is an urban farm, most of the same principles and techniques used for growing produce can be applied on any farm using sustainable growing methods. The market garden is actually quite large and is an ideal size for most beginning farmers and ranchers to consider.
